“This isn't the end, Harumi. This is just the beginning. Without my power, without my friends, I'm gonna fight you. I'm gonna fight on. Because a ninja never quits.”

The eighth season of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, subtitled Sons of Garmadon, was preceded by Season 7 and succeeded by Season 9 and is the first part of the Oni Trilogy.[1] Lord Garmadon was the mascot character, Lloyd is the focus ninja and intro character, Harumi serves as the main antagonist, and the Sons of Garmadon are the villainous faction of the season.

The first 7 minutes of the first episode premiered on July 23, 2017, at the San Diego Comic-Con as part of the preview. The trailer was released on January 5, 2018. The first episode was released in Australia on January 20, 2018. It was made available on the US Cartoon Network app, website, and On-Demand on March 30, 2018. To familiarize new fans brought in by The LEGO Ninjago Movie, the design of the ninja's suits and faces are based on their movie designs. The season also recasts Sam Vincent as the voice of Lloyd, supplanting Jillian Michaels, who voiced the character prior to Season 8.

Official description[]

The Sons of Garmadon, a mysterious gang of criminals, are after the Three Oni Masks in the action-packed season 8 of the NINJAGO TV series, and you can get a first look at the trailer right here! They plan to use the power of the masks to resurrect Lord Garmadon. Can the might of Lloyd, the Green Ninja, and the ninja team stop them in time?[2]

Designs[]

All the ninjas' designs have been changed so the transition for new fans that came from The LEGO Ninjago Movie would be easier. Now all the ninja look similar to their movie counterparts, though the eighth season remains canonical to the previous seasons of the show. In the first episode of the season, Cole and Jay have a short argument where Cole implies that Wu’s trip through time may have caused them to "look totally different and not even know it." While the Hageman Brothers say that this is the explanation for the design changes,[3] Tommy Andreasen says there is no real canonical reason and it is simply a fourth-wall-breaking meta-joke.[4]

  • Kai has a shorter version of his movie hairpiece, his movie self's thinner eyebrows, and a lighter version of his movie self's scar. Tommy Andreasen said specifically that he didn't like the size of Kai's movie counterpart's hair, so they shortened it.[5] It is also now a shade of reddish-brown instead of dark brown. Tommy Andreasen also responded to a question about Kai's hair change with "All it takes to change a head of hair is a brisk breeze",[6] though this does not completely explain it as the texture of his hair also changed.
  • Jay has freckles and lost the notch on his eyebrow. According to Tommy Andreasen, it's possible the eyebrow notch grew over because Jay had "been out on that windy cold mountain searching for Wu for too long."[7] The Hageman Brothers said that Jay always had freckles, but you never knew they were there.[8] He has his movie self's hairpiece, but his freckles are lighter and less apparent.
  • Cole's scar has now faded and is no longer visible, but it can be seen whenever he uses his RX powers. He has longer hair, and his eyes now have a more relaxed look to them, as his movie counterpart does. He has his movie self's eyebrows. His RX powers are now yellow/orange.
  • Zane has a new holographic projector that allows him to "transform" into anyone and change from titanium form to human form, without having actual flesh. He now has his hairpiece from the movie and the same blue eyes in human form. Of the ninja, he looks the most like his pre-Season 8 self, with the same eyebrows and mouth, and his Titanium form having the same face, excepting the new scratch on the upper left side. The blue "visor" that used to appear when his hood was up no longer appears.
  • Lloyd looks nearly identical to his movie counterpart, with long hair and green eyes that are more subtle that glow when he uses Spinjitzu. However, while in the movie Lloyd has a mostly black suit with green accents, the opposite is true for the show. His eyes are also slightly closer together.
  • Nya also looks nearly identical to her movie counterpart, having her movie hair, mouth, and mole on her cheek. According to Tommy Andreasen, Jay refers to it as a "mark of eternal beauty."[9]
  • Wu's mouth is no longer three-dimensional.
  • Garmadon's appearance is the same as his movie counterpart, the difference being that part of Garmadon's rib cage is cracked open, partially exposed with a purple liquid oozing from his torso.
  • Kai, Cole, Zane, and Lloyd have their weapons from the movie.
  • P.I.X.A.L.'s hair is now the same piece as Nya's.
  • Mystake has a slightly different face print.
  • Some characters' closed eyes have more of an arch shape, as opposed to the straighter, more simple designs previously used. Some characters' smiling mouths also look different, having a small upward arch in the middle rather than a consistent round curve as previously seen. However, in flashbacks to new scenes before Season 8, these changes are not present.
  • Spinjitzu tornadoes look different: while Jay's and Lloyd's looks the same, it is more textured. Kai and Zane's lose the tornado shape and have a more textured, oval-shaped tornado, Cole's is filled with more rocks and the bottom of the tornado is red, and Nya's is a more spiral shape and is water-colored instead of silver.

Trivia[]

The Trivia on Season 8: Sons of Garmadon needs to be organized.
  • You can help the wiki by organizing the following information chronologically based on how the information applies to the series.
  • This template can be removed once the section has been organized.
  • This is the first season in which:
    • Skylor and Ronin do not make physical appearances for the first time since their debut seasons (Tournament of Elements and Possession respectively). However, Skylor and Ronin are pictured in photographs on the Destiny's Bounty, as are Ed, Edna, Ray, and Maya, and Cyrus Borg who is also pictured in a photograph in newspaper and a painting in Borg Tower.
    • Jillian Michaels does not appear, as Lloyd is voiced by Sam Vincent starting this season. This is the first time one of the ninja is given a different voice actor in the series.
    • "The Weekend Whip" is not the theme of the intro, nor are the characters' names shown as they appear on screen. However, the "Jump up, kick back, whip around and. . . ." portion of the Weekend Whip's melody can be briefly heard in the very beginning. The ninja sing the song in "True Potential."
      • The song was not included because it would not match the tone of the season. For example, it would not make sense to play "a positive poppy song" over the intro of "Dead Man's Squall," which began with Zane seemingly being killed.[10]
    • The name of the season is written in the episode title cards.
    • Ian James Corlett is not part of the voice cast.
    • Multiple characters announce the title cards at the beginning of each episode (Lloyd announced episodes 75-83, and Garmadon announced the finale).
      • Because of this, this is also the first season to not have Master Wu announce the episode title at the beginning.
    • Wu does not physically appear in his normal form in the present day, as he was a baby. This is the only season where this is the case for Wu. He would finally return to normal at the end of Hunted.
    • No flying vehicles appear in sets.
    • The ninja do not defeat the villain at the end.
      • Some time before this season was released, Tommy Andreasen said he was pretty sure this would happen some time in the future.[11]
  • This is the last season to be released on DVD.
  • There were originally plans for Echo Zane to be revealed as the true identity of Mr. E,[12] as Harumi and her team would've found him at Lighthouse Island and upgraded him. The concept was scrapped and isn't canon, as the Hageman brothers felt there wasn't time for it.
  • Hunted and March of the Oni were developed as companions to Sons of Garmadon. All of them together form a 24 episode arc.[13][14]
  • Despite Lloyd having a new voice actor, and the ninja all gaining new suits based on their movie counterparts, all the other ninja retain their previous voice actors.
  • Dan and Kevin Hageman returned to write this season. Previously, they handed over the writing duties to David Shayne for "Day of the Departed" and The Hands of Time, as the brothers were occupied with writing their Netflix original series, TrollHunters[15] and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.[citation needed]
  • In May 2017, Tommy Andreasen hosted a contest where Ninjago fans submitted their artwork that would be displayed by a child around the age of 9-10 that was a huge fan of Ninjago.[16] The character was revealed to be the young Harumi before she lost her birth parents.
  • Various things were revealed in this season, such as the First Spinjitzu Master's origins, the identity of the new Samurai X, the fate of P.I.X.A.L., and how Zane inherited his Ice Element Powers.
  • For April Fools day, Tommy Andreasen posted a status on Twitter with three events from Sons of Garmadon, two of which are real and one of which is fake. The three events stated that Cole would do a lot of singing, that there would be old recurring enemies, and that a new ninja would join the team.[17] The two confirmed events are that there would be old recurring enemies, as Garmadon was resurrected in this season, and that Cole would sing, as he is seen singing in the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and ninth episodes and in a teaser trailer. He also performs "The Weekend Whip" with most of the team in the ninth episode.
    • After he sang as Cole, Kirby Morrow would not stop singing in real life, to the extent that it annoyed his family.[18]
  • Tommy Andreasen addressed Season 8 as "next level Ninjago," implying the many new major changes in the series' tone.[19][20]
  • The title of the season and a clip were revealed at San Diego Comic-Con.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, the first episode was made to be ready for release by January 1, 2018.[21]
  • A 90-second trailer was released on January 5, 2018.
  • The art direction of Sons of Garmadon was based on the 1988 Japanese film, Akira.[22]
  • Three teasers were released on January 16, 2018: Power of the Oni Masks, about the Oni Masks, Mysterious Biker Gang, about the Sons of Garmadon, and A Royal Encounter, about the relationship between Lloyd and Harumi.
  • Ninjago City now looks more like the city in The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
  • This is the second wave of sets to have no dragons in the sets, the first being Day of the Departed. This may be due to the abundance and heavy focus of dragons in Hunted.
  • This is the second season to air entirely in Australia/New Zealand before the United States, with the first being Rebooted.
  • Despite the six ninja and Garmadon receiving new designs from The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Misako remains the same design from the previous seasons, although her streak of white hair appears more prominent, after being absent since "The Attack".
  • All of Sons of Garmadon was released on the Cartoon Network US app, website, and On Demand on March 30, 2018. The first season to be put online before airing on television was Tournament of Elements.
  • This is the fourth season where the Great Devourer triggered a season's main events. In Rise of the Snakes, the Serpentine sought to awaken the Devourer, in Legacy of the Green Ninja the Stone Army was awakened due to the Devourer's toxic venom seeping underground, in The Hands of Time, the Devourer's Vermillion eggs were used by Krux and Acronix to maneuver the Iron Doom. In this season, Harumi seeks to revive Lord Garmadon, as she looks up to him as the one who killed her parents' murderer—the Great Devourer.
  • This was the fourth season where the final battle took place in Ninjago City, following seasons one, two and three.
    • The final battle of Skybound took place in Djinjago, which hovered over Ninjago City - although the battle didn't take place in the city itself.
  • This is the second season to have no Serpentine since their debut in Rise of the Snakes, the first being Possession.
  • This season made minifigures more exclusive; counting the sets alone, without any polybags, Lloyd is the only ninja that appears in more than one set. Similarly, Mr. E has the same effect to him.
  • Season 8 marks the only season to have the ninja defeated, and separated in the end.
  • Master Wu in his elderly form is seen in the official trailer for the season. He also appears during Cole's flashback in "The Jade Princess" and Zane's in "Snake Jaguar."
  • The season has 3 different intros, albeit with no visual differences, the music changes. In "Dead Man's Squall," the music from Zane’s flashbacks before his sacrifice in "The Titanium Ninja" was used. After that, a new intro similar to the first, but slightly slower, was used in "Dread on Arrival".
  • Sons of Garmadon marks the only season of Ninjago to end with the six ninja being separated within different realms. It also marks the only season of Ninjago to end with a ninja losing his Elemental Power.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, production issues during the seventh season's development caused the vendor to be dismissed and replaced with another, resulting in this season's improved animation quality.[23]
  • According to Tommy Andreasen in the live-chat of the Eljay Johnsen Show, Jillian Michaels auditioned to voice Lloyd in this season, but they did not think her voice worked well for an older Lloyd who has a love interest.[24]
  • The Hageman Brothers stated that they tried to make this season more cinematic than previous ones.[25]
  • Garmadon's appearance on the set boxes is taken from The LEGO Ninjago Movie, even his blue cloak is visible.
  • From this season until Season 10, much darker colors are used and animation is improved, for example the lines on Wu's hat are visible or the trees have many more leaves. Most backgrounds also look much more realistic.
  • There are some differences involving the ninja's powers in this season:
    • The Hageman Brothers stated they opted for a more grounded tone, so the ninja often draw their powers from their surroundings rather than creating them out of thin air.[26] Some examples of this are Nya in "The Mask of Deception," Kai in "The Jade Princess," and Jay in "The Oni and the Dragon."
    • In order to prevent the characters from being overpowered and "to create a more grounded world", the ninja no longer use Elemental Dragons or Airjitzu.[27][28] Though no explanation is given in the show, Way of the Departed offers possible explanations.
    • The ninja all all have distinctive warm-up motions before doing Spinjitzu (Lloyd performs windmill arms, Zane does a spinning handstand, Kai does three turns in the air, Nya does a turn and then a back-flip, Jay turns once, and Cole hits the ground). They also occasionally do upside-down Spinjitzu.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, this season was originally set to be more of a continuation of the story from The Hands of Time, but the existence of the movie forced the writers to add Garmadon back into the series, changing the plan of the season.[29]
Font comparison

Aldo the Apache (top) and Kunoichi (bottom)

  • This is the first season to feature the "Kunoichi" font in the title cards, which replaced the "Aldo the Apache" font used in all prior seasons.
  • This season shares many similarities to Possession.
    • Both the main antagonists (Morro and Harumi) have similar motives; they wish to resurrect a greater being to take over Ninjago (The Preeminent and Lord Garmadon). The difference, however, was that the Preeminent was capable of conquering the Sixteen Realms, while Lord Garmadon only sought out to conquer all of Ninjago.
    • At some point, the ninja and their allies capture of the members of the villainous factions and interrogate them for answers in regards to the main antagonist's motives (Nya, Wu, Misako and Ronin capture Ghoultar, one of the Ghost Warriors in "Kingdom Come," while the Ninjago Police capture Luke Cunningham, one of the Sons of Garmadon in "The Oni and the Dragon," for Cole and Zane question and convince him to drink the Tea of Truth to force answers out of him). But unlike with Ghoultar, Wu and the others did not necessarily succeed in baiting out answers from the ghost general.
    • In the penultimate episodes ("Curseworld, Part I" and "True Potential") Lloyd has a face-off with Morro and Lord Garmadon respectively, and at the end, Lloyd ultimately loses in both instances with devastating aftermaths (Lloyd is taken to the Cursed Realm, while Lloyd is severely injured and loses his powers).
    • In the final episodes ("Curseworld, Part II" and "Big Trouble, Little Ninjago") a colossal being is summoned and led by the main antagonist to strike at the city in which the rest of the ninja attempt to protect said city (Morro unleashes the Preeminent across Stiix, while Lord Garmadon controls the Colossus and begins to attack Ninjago City). Also during this time, both colossal beings destroy the ninja's vehicles (the Preeminent destroys Jay's Ghost Taker GT, Zane's Titan Mech and Cole's Rock Cycle, while the Colossus crushes the Destiny's Bounty).
    • Additionally, both seasons include darker tones and atmosphere to the overall story and plotline.
  • In the 11th episode of LEGO Dreamzzz, Mateo's father can be seen watching this season with Izzie.
