“But if there's anything I learned, it's that wishing for something won't make it come true. We all tried to get something from Nadakhan, and look what happened.”

The sixth season of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, subtitled Skybound, was preceded by Season 5 and succeeded by "Day of the Departed" and Season 7. Jay is the focus ninja and mascot character, Nadakhan serves as the main antagonist, and the Sky Pirates are the villainous faction of the season.

Official description[]

With the defeat of Morro’s ghost invasion, the ninja have now become huge media celebrities. But dark forces once more threaten NINJAGO Island as the Teapot of Tyrahn is rediscovered by the ghost of Clouse, Master Chen’s former right-hand man. He allows Nadakhan, an evil Djinn, and captain of the infamous Misfortune’s Keep, to escape the teapot. After reassembling his pirate crew, Nadakhan returns to his home realm of Djinjago, to find it collapsing. This destruction, caused by the ninja defeating the Preeminent, leads Nadakhan to vow revenge. He refits his ship so it can fly and prepares to attack. Now they are Sky Pirates.[1]

Sets[]

Jay was the mascot ninja, and the promotional and box art was appropriately focused on the sky. The collectible items were the Djinn Blades, even though there was only one Djinn Blade in the TV series. The sets mostly consisted of Sky Pirate vehicles and Elemental Dragons. Unlike most seasons, this season received a second, smaller set wave alongside the "Day of the Departed" sets. This wave featured a few located-based sets (Kryptarium Prison and Lighthouse Island), presumably because the later release date allowed the sets to be based on the episodes, as opposed to the other way around as is usually the case.

Trivia[]

  • According to Tommy Andreasen:
    • This is the season where the Hageman Brothers worked the most independently.[2] They have stated it is one of their favorite seasons,[3] while it may be one of Andreasen's least favorite due to his minimal involvement.[4]
    • The season "had very little concept work done before writing commenced."[5]
    • The season's plot was inspired from "Dracula with a bit of Aladdin."[6]
  • The series concept was originally involving 'ghost pirates.'[7]
  • Jay Vincent and Michael Kramer, the series' composers, did not create a new soundtrack for this season due to restraints on their contracts.[8] The only new piece of music they composed for the season was a theme for Nadakhan, which Jay Vincent released in February 2017. All the music featured throughout Skybound, except for Nadakhan's theme, is reprised from previous seasons.
  • Nadakhan's minifigure's tailpiece is a recolored version of the ghost tail, though in the series, his lower body appears as a column of orange smoke. The use of this piece is because LEGO wanted to keep using it since they'd already made the materials for the previous season, so the Hageman Brothers came up with the idea to use it for a djinn.[9]
  • This is one of the few waves of sets that do not feature any sort of mech, for the ninja or the villains.
  • This is the only season where the majority of the episodes are in an undone timeline.
  • This season along with The Hands of Time, Sons of Garmadon, and Hunted were all released on Netflix in America in 2019, thus making it the season that took the longest to be featured on Netflix.
  • A recurring Easter egg in this season is the "Wu-Cru" logo being hidden somewhere in each episode, except Enkrypted:
    • "Infamous" – Among some photos in Lil Nelson's hospital room.
    • "Public Enemy Number One" – On the middle pillar in the Library of Domu.
    • "Misfortune Rising" – On one of the warning signs out the front of the repo yard.
    • "On a Wish and a Prayer" – On the underside of the rope bridge on Tiger Widow Island.
    • "My Dinner With Nadakhan – On a lantern next to a sleeping Sky Pirate.
    • "Wishmasters" – Within a barrel on the Misfortune's Keep.
    • "The Last Resort" – On a wall in Dr. Julien's workshop.
    • "Operation Land Ho!" – On a pinboard in the Police Station.
    • "The Way Back" – On the billboard after Jay's final wish.
  • The order of the characters' appearances in the intro is based on the order of when they get trapped into the Djinn Blade. Nya is the only character not to get trapped in the Djinn Blade by Nadakhan, while Jay got himself trapped in the Djinn Blade on purpose.
  • In some airings, the tune of the audio was half a semitone lower.[citation needed]
  • The intro is the only intro in the first seven seasons not to have a group shot at the end.
  • In this season, specifically "Public Enemy Number One" and "Misfortune Rising," the police can be seen shooting guns, which is not often seen in the show. They would later affirm in “Dread on Arrival” that they do not use guns.
  • A few times in the season ("The Last Resort" and "The Way Back"), Nya implies she doesn't want to be a ninja. According to Tommy Andreasen, she stayed a ninja as opposed to Samurai X due to "responsibility/ destiny/ obligation ... pick your favourite".[10]
  • This is the first season where Garmadon does not appear physically (only appearing in pictures during "Misfortune Rising"), and as such the first season where Mark Oliver is not part of the voice cast.
  • Skybound is also the first season in which the ninja have been arrested which would lead to them being on the run as fugitives.
  • This season can be considered to be the air counterpart of the fourteenth season, Seabound. In addition, both seasons have similar names.

Focus characters[]

Protagonists[]

  • Jay was the focus ninja and mascot of this season. The details about his past and how he tried his best to win back Nya had become the main storyline of it. Jay also appears in all episodes.
    • Jay was focused on in Episodes 58, 59, 60, 62, 63, and 64.
      • In Episode 58, Jay used two of his wishes, which resulted in him discovering he is adopted and that his real name is 'Jay Gordon'.
      • In Episode 59, he has a conversation with Cole about meeting Nadakhan. Later, Cole reveals this which causes the team to have Jay retrieve the Tiger Widow Venom. Jay successfully does so but is unfortunately captured by Nadakhan and the Sky Pirates.
      • In Episode 60, he has a difficult time being captured on Misfortune's Keep and has a meal with Nadakhan where he discovers the latter's plan. He also gains his eyepatch in this episode.
      • In Episode 62, he breaks down as he is responsible for his friend's banishment into the Djinn Blade. Later, Nya throws him into the Traveller's Tea portal which causes him to be the final ninja remaining.
      • Jay forms a new team in Episode 63 and showcases his leadership for the first time this season. They successfully steal the Djinn Blade, which Jay eagerly enters it and saves everyone from the weapon.
      • In Episode 64, he leads the ninja to a battle against Nadakhan, where he and the latter battle until Flintlocke shoots Nadakhan, and Nya, with the Tiger Widow venom. Jay then uses his final wish to undo this season's events after the death of Nya and ends up with her in the end.
  • This is the first season to focus solely on Jay.
  • Nya also had a major role in this season. She also appears in all episodes.
    • The story between her and Jay was vital in this season, and both of them appeared in every single episode.
    • This season also continues her Water Ninja story from Season 5, with her not wanting to be labelled as the "girl ninja" and wanting to choose her own destiny.
  • Cole and Lloyd had heavier roles than Zane and Kai. Cole has appearances in Episodes 55 -61 and 63 - 64.
    • Cole's ability in being a ghost, his relationship with Jay, and how he used his wishes were also shown to be important factors in this season. This is the only season to fully feature Cole in his ghost form throughout it before returning back to a human in "Day of the Departed."
      • Cole has a conversation with Jay in Episode 59 and shows their friendship. He then tells the team Jay's encounters with Nadakhan.
    • Lloyd had a significant role in Episode 61.
      • How Lloyd got his wishes to become wise and how he used his newfound wisdom to save Jay and Nya were shown in Episode 61.
  • Zane and Kai had relatively minor roles in this season, having been trapped in the Djinn Blade relatively early.
    • Zane had appearances in Episodes 55 - 59 and 62 - 64.
      • Zane's role was mainly about his confrontation with Nadakhan in the boat in episode 59, where Zane attempted to outsmart Nadakhan which ended badly when P.I.X.A.L is erased. Fortunately, Jay's last wish prevented this from happening.
    • Kai had appearances in Episodes 55 - 58 and 62 - 64.
      • Kai's role was very minor in this season, with one important aspect of having been him being transported back in time to see his father in his youth. However, all events were undone and he has no recollection of seeing it.
  • P.I.X.A.L. made a few appearances, behind Zane, in episodes 55, 56, 57, and 59.
  • Skylor made an appearance in Episodes 63 and 64 as she assisted Jay.
  • Sensei Wu played a minor role in this season, arguably one of his smallest roles yet.
  • Misako is added to the title sequence despite playing a minor role compared to previous seasons.
  • As noted above, the order the main characters are introduced in the intro is the order in which they each got trapped in the Djinn Blade.

Antagonists[]

  • Nadakhan served as the main antagonist of this season.
  • Flintlocke and Clancee serve as the secondary antagonists of this season.
  • Clouse, despite his brief appearances throughout the season, is the one who found the Teapot of Tyrahn in Stiix and opened it in order to unleash Nadakhan and use him for his own agenda in his quest for revenge against the ninja. As such, he served as the overarching antagonist of this season.
    • Unfortunately, it didn't work after Clouse used his three wishes, with the third being wishing for it all to go away, resulting in the dark sorcerer being imprisoned by Nadakhan himself.
    • These actions essentially make Clouse responsible for the events of the season before Jay used his last wish to undo them.
  • Other important antagonists include Dogshank, Doubloon, Monkey Wretch, Sqiffy and Bucko (episodes 61 and 63), and Delara (episode 64).
  • Ronin sided with the ninja in the previous season, but he betrayed the ninja in episode 56 in exchange for a clean criminal record and a big budget from the cops. However, he sided with the ninja again starting from episode 60.
  • The Sky Pirates were the villainous faction of this season.
